Data and insights to get your project on track
Lesotho is currently grappling with key energy challenges, including a low electrification rate (50% as of 2021), insufficient power generation capacity, and heavy reliance on electricity imports from South Africa and Mozambique. To address these issues, Lesotho aims to enhance energy security by providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy.
GET.invest Lesotho was launched in April 2023 with funding from the European Union and Germany. It builds on the services of the broader GET.invest programme, and tailors them to the Basotho context. GET.invest Lesotho is part of Renewable Lesotho, a joint initiative to increase clean energy generation and energy efficiency in Lesotho.
Partners
To advance the energy transition, GET.invest Lesotho works together with several key partners under Renewable Lesotho, who play diverse and complementary roles in implementing the country window.
The Government of Lesotho and its relevant ministries provide policy direction and regulatory support. The European Investment Bank (EIB) offers financial backing and strategic alignment with broader EU energy objectives. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) brings technical assistance and project implementation expertise. The Association of Bilateral European Development Finance Institutions (EDFI) supports financing for clean energy projects. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) contributes to overall capacity-building and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. GET.invest focuses on catalysing private sector investment in renewable energy, while its sister programme GET.transform improves the enabling environment for energy reforms.
